US imposes 50% tariffs on broad range of Canadian imports

President Donald Trump signed three proclamations on July 20 authorising a 50 % tariff on a wide array of Canadian goods, from wine and hockey sticks to cement and dairy products. The measures, invoked under Section 338 of the 1930 Tariff Act, take effect on August 19 and apply regardless of US‑Mexico‑Canada Agreement eligibility, with energy, potash, fish, critical minerals and existing Section 232 items exempt. The White House says the tariffs respond to Canada’s “discriminatory treatment” of U.S. cars, alcohol and dairy, citing a protectionist dairy regime and recent bans on U.S. alcohol sales in Canadian provinces. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has not commented, while U.S. trade data show a 22 % drop in Canadian imports of U.S. vehicles and an 81 % decline in U.S. alcoholic beverages over the past year.
